Thursday, July 16, welcomed in the over fences classes at AQHA’s 2009 Region Three. They showed a huge growth in entry numbers over last year.

Jenny Welhouse of Poynette, Wisconsin, was chosen as having the “Best Smile of the Show” for her expression as she rode the fence courses (look for more on that later). She rode Beyond Captivating to two regional championships in the green working hunter and working hunter for owner, Kaitlyn York also of Poynette. Kaitlyn was sidelined from showing following shoulder surgery so she cheered her horse on from the stands.

Following the fences, halter horses made their way into the arena. Marty and Karen Heintz, of Pipestone, Minnesota, brought four geldings to show this year.

AgStar sponsored a watermelon feed outside near the horse barn for exhibitors. An impressive fifty-one novice amateur exhibitors competed for honors in their classes. And the day (or night) ended with showmanship.

The weather took an unexpected and unseasonably cool turn on Friday, July 17, sending exhibitors to find coats in their trailers (or in the trade show) to keep warm as pleasure driving and hunter under saddle started out. The cotton gloves with the Region Three logo on them were popular and useful awards.

The exhibitor’s party featured barbeque ribs and cowboy singer Pat Meade to entertain the crowd, making for a very enjoyable and relaxing evening.

A highlight for the day was the “Horse Show To Go” giveaway tack trunk filled with some spectacular prizes. Ten exhibitors were drawn from the entries received by the June 10 pre-entry deadline. These ten exhibitors each received a Region Three medallion with a key taped to the back. The ten each had an opportunity to unlock the tack trunk with their key. The lucky exhibitor whose key opened the trunk won it – and everything inside.

Bob Vannurden was the eventual winner, represented in the drawing by Anne Anderman. Bob was entered and showed in the barrel racing and hadn’t arrived at the show yet when the tack trunk drawing was done.

The tack trunk contained a Region Three t-shirt, document bag, leg wraps, bucket, grooming tote, brush, sweat scraper, a tail extension bag and a gift certificate for ad design and ad in The Equine Chronicle.

There’s more to come!
