I have in my barn a 25 year old mare who I started under saddle at age 2! She had a successful show career and was retired around 10 yrs old back to me. She has been the best confidence builder for many, many students. Plus at 23 she was pulled out of the pasture to compete in a local extreme trail competition (indoors) and placed 3rd out of 20 horse! She was the biggest crowd pleaser, she loped around with the drag, jumped and went over a never seen teeter totter, think she was the only one who actually pushed the big ball herself! She is truly a great horse and will be with me until she passes, even thought I don't own her . She actually belongs to my good friend Joanne Davis who also owns a 21 yr old 1/2 sister in my barn. I own a 21 yr old stallion who has been with me since he was 3. These horses are Skips Eternal Glory (Sneakers), Rapped in Holly (Holly) and The Contortionist ( L'Eggs)... all live and play in Vermont.

I had forgotten that AQHA assumes registered horses over 25 were deceased unless otherwise notified (Back in '98, I had gotten a written request to surrender the original AQHA registation of my first and very recently deceased gelding -- I did not know they would return it to me after updating their records). I have just notified the AQHA Registration Records department that my second horse, registered name Easters Grayson, by Tee Jay Mr Jiggs out of an Easter Gentleman mare, foaled 3/28/1986, is very much alive and living at my ranch in Rendon, Texas.

'Gray Monster' has been on Equine Senior for 6+ years, along with Competitors Edge for his feet and joints but now has Cushings and must take daily pergolide. He's a happy pasture ornament that has to wear a grazing muzzle to prevent founder when the grass is lush.

Jets Flashy Indian is still alive at age 26!! I don't have him anymore, but the current owners love him as he is the steady eddy that he's always been. He lives on the other side of town and I drive by every once in a while to keep an eye on him. It's been many years since I've owned him, but I still miss him. He is a terrific horse!

Dana, wonderful suggestion! We're bringing it up to some key people this week, and hopefully this is something we'll be able to implement right away!

Thank you, and keep the good suggestions coming!

Hi!

I was wondering if I could make a sugestion? Is it at all possible that AQHA could notify owners by mail when their horse turns 25 that unless AQHA recieves notice the horse will be marked as deceased? Just a thought. This isn't something I, personally, will have to worry about for some time (my horse is only 8) but it would be nice to have a reminder of this policy when the time comes.

Thanks!

Hi Ruth (and others with these golden oldies!),
So neat to hear about such a long-standing relationship! You're always welcome to submit a photo and short story to America's Horse magazine at aqhajrnl@aqha.org. We enjoy running that sort of thing in our Readers Write section!
Best regards,
Holly

My 1974 AQHA gelding, Saint Gaudens (Gaudy) golden palomino, named after the $20 Gold Coin, will be 38 in June. He is in wonderful condition for his age. I will be 67 in a few days and have had Gaudy since he was born when I was 29. He has been an all around great horse and my best friend. Every day he is on this earth is a blessing.
Has AQHA ever made an effort to locate the oldest living AQHA horse?
