Sharla Stadstads winning piece Use Your Head

Sharla Stadstad's winning piece, "Use Your Head"

This year’s art show contains all kinds of paintings, sculptures and drawings all depicting the theme “Heads or Tails.”  In the coming weeks, we will be spotlighting some of the winning pieces.  Today’s piece is the AQHYA first place winner, Use Your Head, by Sharla Stadstad from Manvel, ND.  Sharla told us some interesting facts about her piece and her creative process as well.

“I learned a lot about painting the classic shape of the American Quarter Horse head; small ears, big jaw and large eyes,” Sharla said. “I painted the head portraying my own Quarter Horse, Watch Rita Rock. I am happy with the finished work.

“I like to try and paint something no one else has done,” she continued. “I wanted to convey the feeling you get when trying to do a crossword or puzzle. I also tried to portray the energy and vividness of color to attract your eye to the picture and then make you suddenly realize there are hidden horse heads surrounding the main body of work.”

The Two Bits for Your Brain/AQHYA Youth Art Show is viewable to the public at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame through January 8, 2010.
