Best of the Bios

“Listen to this one!”

Lorraine Luba and Good For The Ladys
That’s one of the normal shouts you’ll hear from us in the AQHA Media Office while reading through the exhibitor’s bio cards.
For each of AQHA’s world shows, exhibitors are asked to complete qualifier questionnaire. The information is used in the announcer’s box, AQHA staff takes show suggestions from them, and the Journal staff uses them to pick up on great story ideas.
Every once in a while there’s something written down that makes us all laugh or smile in the pressroom. Our Quarter Horse people are awfully interesting, and they have great senses of humor.
Here’s a sample of some of our favorites from the 2009 Bayer Select World Championship Show.
In response to, “Tell us about your horse that qualified for the Bayer Select World…”

Rodger Coday and Lil Red Chickadee
“Cappy is 16 years young so we got rid of his “comb-over” and roached his mane…”
–Paul Gonya, Purcell, Oklahoma
“My horse is Phil the Pill, known nationwide for being a handful. He just needs a pacifier.”
–Mariann Harrington, Cabot, Arkansas
“Willie is fairly new to me. He has a great personality and is beautiful. Friends call him Willie Stop Growing.”
–Sydna “Sam” Bass, Leona, Texas
“Chickadee is a DIVA, is sassy and knows how pretty she is! Of course, she always wants her way especially since she won the two world championships in 2008.”
–Rodger Coday, Owasso, Oklahoma
And, “What do you enjoy most about the Bayer Select World Show?”
“Partying to 7:30 p.m.; sharing pain pills with fellow participants; seeing who’s still alive and toasting to be here next year.”
–Paul Gonya, Purcell, Oklahoma

Melissa Hood and Watch This Way
Or, “What events will you be competing in?”
“Trail. We would have done showmanship but my outfit shrunk!”
–Wendie Brandenburg, Coeur D’Alene, Idaho
“Tell us about any adversities that you or your horse have faced.”
“After having had two hip replacement surgeries, the only event I am allowed to participate in is showmanship, and I am just thrilled to be here.”
–Lorraine Luba, D.V.M., Louisville, Kentucky
“How did you get started showing?”
“Started at age 7 (1965) showing open shows with a pony purchased at the local sale barn for $52.50 (saddle and bridle included).”
–Missy Hood, Columbia, Missouri
AQHA has found yet another way for people to get their American Quarter Horse fix. Did you know that Americas Horse TV has all kinds of great footage of Quarter Horses and influential horsemen? And best of all, it’s totally FREE!
