All the ins, outs and in-betweens of naming your American Quarter Horse.
I find myself intrigued most days about some of the names owners and breeders come up with for their American Quarter Horses. I’ve seen plays on words; made-up-on-the-spot-for-the-occasion names; we-must-have-let-that-one-slip names; cliché names; and the ever-popular pedigree names. I get a chuckle each day wondering, “How in the heck did they think of that? I never, in a million years, woulda thought of that name!”

What and how an American Quarter Horse can be named is a common question. AQHA does have rules that tend to change from time to time regarding naming a horse. I’ll explain these rules, plus tell you how to change your horse’s name if you decide you don’t like it, or didn’t pick it in the first place. Check out the AQHA Rule Book for a complete look at AQHA rules and regulations. Read the rest of this entry »

How to make leasing an American Quarter Horse a smooth operation.
Filing a lease with AQHA is a fairly simple process that is often overlooked. Many people are unaware when they enter a lease agreement with an American Quarter Horse owner that they need to officially file the lease with AQHA. This is a very important step to take. You’ll protect yourself and any investment you make by entering into a lease agreement. It’s always good to have it in black and white!

How to get your Jockey Club-registered Thoroughbred listed for breeding with AQHA.
American Quarter Horses are extremely versatile horses, very strong and powerful. There’s no question about the American Quarter Horse’s ability to beat out any other breed in a short-distance race – he’s just built for it! But quite some time ago, AQHA’s eyes turned to the Jockey Club and the large, long and lean Thoroughbred horses it registers. Thoroughbred (TB) horses succeed in long-distance racing. So what happens when you mix the sought-after characteristics of the Quarter Horse and the Thoroughbred? You get an Appendix Quarter Horse that will be a powerhouse on the race track and capable of so much more!

Get your AQHA questions answered live on Facebook!
AQHA’s Facebook page has proven to be an excellent outlet for assisting customers with their AQHA business as well as answering general questions. I’ve started a bi-monthly discussion on AQHA’s Facebook page, where I answer questions and check the status on work you’ve submitted to the office for processing.
I’ve always believed in the philosophy that if I have a question about something, chances are someone else is wondering the same thing. Read on for more in-depth explanations to a few questions we’ve received through Facebook that I thought were interesting. Read the rest of this entry »

How to get your AQHA questions answered on Facebook.
AQHA’s Facebook Page is home to more than 380,000 fans, and I am lucky enough to be one of the staff members here at AQHA who monitors the page. We are able to answer pretty much any AQHA-related question you might have right there on our Facebook page’s wall. We also monitor the page for those questions on weekends and holidays, so it’s a good way to get a quick question answered when AQHA offices aren’t open for you to call. In order to get your questions answered as quickly as possible, there are a few things you need to include.
If you are asking a question about paperwork you’ve submitted for a horse, include:
- The horse’s registered name and/or number.
- The nature of the paperwork you are or have submitted.
If you are asking for help identifying a horse include (this can be tricky since AQHA searches sire and dam records in order to find the horse. Because of that, we must have one or both of the parent’s registration information in order to even have a starting point. This is an instance where we will usually ask you to call customer service.):
- The registered name and/or number of the horse’s sire and/or dam.
- The color and approximate year the horse was born.
- Any identifying markings, scars or brands.
If you have a question about your AQHA Membership include:
If you have a question about your Journal subscription include:
Those are just about the most popular questions we get asked on Facebook. If I didn’t cover a topic you have a question about, just remember – the more information you put in your initial question, the faster we’re able to answer it. We try to help everyone who asks a question without asking you to call customer service, but there are some problems that can be solved much more easily through a phone call. Check out our contact page to see a few other ways you can get in touch with AQHA. I look forward to helping some of you out on Facebook soon!

Make minor additions to your horse’s AQHA Registration Certificate – for free!
Some AQHA certificate corrections are obvious. A missed pastern or a change in color are two examples that happen frequently.
But what about a small scar or a brand? Even some newly gelded horses’ certificates fall through the cracks. But when your unmarked sorrel gelding is in a pasture with 10 other unmarked sorrel geldings, that reported scar or brand – even gelding stamp – is what could set your horse apart and maybe even bring him home if he is stolen.
