Cover Contest

August 24, 2010

We have a winner! Your pick will grace the cover of the October 2010 America’s Horse magazine.

A million thanks to go all voters! “Swing Low,” depicting a ranch cowboy going for the heels of a Hereford, is the winner. This oil painting is by Edgar Sotelo, who grew up in Mexico drawing cowboys and Indians and today strives for a honorable portrayal of the western lifestyle. And to the art afficianados out there – the original of this newly minted cover is still available for purchase in the America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale for $750.

The America’s Horse in Art sale benefits the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo and its efforts to preserve the history of our breed.

While we love Edgar’s art, there really weren’t any losers in this case. Both of the runners-up, artwork by Jan Mapes and Dyrk Godby, were popular with our readers. Because of the great interest in all three artists, we’ll try to feature all of them in upcoming issues of America’s Horse.

Remember, to see the winner – the fans’ choice – in print, you have to be an AQHA member. America’s Horse magazine goes to all AQHA members 10 times a year, and it’ll give you the low-down on Association news, plus human-interest features, horse training how-to’s and more!

See a slideshow of all the 2010 pieces for sale in the America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale.

They were all beautiful and it was hard to choose, but there was something so evocative about “Cool Water”. It just brought to mind those quiet moments we all enjoy spending with our horses.

  • Rhonda Stock

I agree. So hard to pick as all 3 were beautiful! “Cool Water” captured me, having just finished my first big trail ride and crossing water for the first time. :)

  • Tristan Bristol

It was very hard to choose. “Cool water” was ver pretty but i just loved the detail of “Swing Low”

The cool water once is beautifuland so peaceful! I think we can all relate to letting our horses drink out of a nice mountain stream while trail riding!

SInce the cover is for October I chose the roping cowboy since most rancher’s have some lat calves they’ve got to brand before the shipping in November. Seemd appropiate to the time of year.

  • Cindy

Swing low is beautiful and depicts the versatility of our amazing QH friends. Much emphasis has been on the halter and performance of these friends, it is nice to see their working side!

  • Christina Marquez

It was a difficult choice between Swing low and Cool Water. Cool water just made me sit back and relax. It’s what I enjoy and can totally relate. It was a very calming feeling. But I really enjoyed both. They are both great. It would be nice to have one for Oct. and the other for Nov. as they are equally as nice.
