Region 8 Day 1
June 25, 2010
The first day of this three-day event features reining, working cow horse, speed events and western riding.
Sixty-eight-year-old Joan Carter of Newton, Kansas, didn’t have to haul her 14-year-old mare, Leofritzs Baby Boots far for this year’s Region 8 AQHA Regional Championship. The “senior blondes,” as Joan calls herself and Baby, hauled only about 15 miles and hauled home a gold Montana Silversmiths buckle in amateur reining.
Spectators also saw a group of Oklahoma gals, who normally compete in western and English classes, enter the barrel racing and pole bending just forĀ fun. Their times weren’t exactly in the range considered necessary to win, but a few of them did walk away with some nifty AQHA corporate partner goodies.

I have been “winging it” at horseshows for the past 2 1/2 years. Learning by trial and error. I have had alot of advice from friends who show and attended alot of great clinics, like Quarterfest. so when I got to Kansas on Thursday, I was ready to try anything new. My horse(Rebel Jim Mccloud) is 4 this year and has no fear. We tried the nov. am. working cow class since We learned the basics on cutting at Quarterfest. Friday Nov. Am. Hunter Hack was offered. I was visiting with a Lady Who trains working hunter horses, named Paula Pray, who asked if I’d ever tried to jump before. I said “No”, but with a little help on my part I’m sure Jim could do it. She then offered to help me. I really thought that since Jim and I are so untrained she would get exasperated and tell us ,like so many others have, thers no hope without a finished horse. She took her time, explained everything very clearly and IT ALL WORKED!!!!! We jumped. It is like flying. I am so glad that I came to this show and so thankful to AQHA for creating the Professional Horseman program. Paula Pray definatly is a Professional Horseman and now a friend. Thanks for the opprotunity to try new classas and learn new things. Jim thanks you, too.

Had a great time at the Region 8 and felt very welcome by all. Thanks for the cool prize for the open all around. It is perfect for carrying my laptop. And I am actually from Louisville, CO, not Longmont as the results say, though it is the same county.
