Happy Halloween!

October 29, 2012

Help your horse (and yourself!) get into the Halloween spirit with these fun ideas.

Sea HorseHalloween is upon us! Why shouldn’t your American Quarter Horse be a part of the fun? Here’s a Halloween horse treat recipe to get you started in the spooky direction. This recipe is courtesy of Paramount Performance:

Pumpkin Horse Treats

  • 1 small pumpkin
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 18 oz. jar of oats
  • 1/4 cup of molasses
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar

Preheat your oven to 400 F. Cut pumpkin, without string, seeds or rind, into cubes. Place pumpkin into a large saucepan with enough water to cover the bottom of the pan. Put cinnamon on top. Let cook on medium heat for 45 minutes, or until mushy, stirring frequently.

Let cool.

In a large bowl, mix oats, brown sugar, molasses and pumpkin mix. Roll into balls and put on a greased cookie sheet. If the mixture is not thick enough, add more molasses.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool. Treats can be frozen.

When my daughter was young, we used to dress ourselves and horses, then go trick-or-treating around our rural neighborhood. I still have all our old costumes, for her and her daughter.

Black magic is my horse’s registered name, but he answers to teddy and the more affectionate, Doo
