Horse Reproduction Report
A four-part guide to pregnant mare care and breeding your horse.
There’s nothing more rewarding than a healthy new foal. But it takes work to get there.
Learn from the experts with AQHA’s Horse Reproduction report. This valuable resource will help you take care of your mare and be better prepared for the big day when your foal enters the world.
The Horse Reproduction report covers:
- Good breeding conformation and what problems to look for
- Reproductive problems and practical solutions
- Costs involved with breeding and the basic procedures you can expect to pay for
- Pros and cons of breeding on foal heat
Dr. Michelle LeBlanc, from Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital of Kentucky, explains how to evaluate your mare’s reproductive conformation and what it means for your breeding plans.
“The uterus is held in place by the broad ligaments that attach dorsally and a fatty tissue that continues back to the perineum,” LeBlanc says. “That’s all that holds the uterus in place.”
Dr. LeBlanc also explains the importance of proactive screenings of your mare’s uterine health in the fall before the breeding seasons starts. She outlines some of the possible costs associated with reproductive health screenings for your mare.
“Some veterinarians will culture a mare early in the season as a pre-breeding checkup, especially if the mare has had problems in the past,” she says. “Often it’s done when a mare shows signs of inflammation or infection, or to try to diagnose why a mare isn’t getting in foal.”
Dr. William B. Ley, from the Regional Equine Associates Central Hospital of Virginia, discusses the costs and benefits of breeding your mare back during the foal heat cycle directly after giving birth.
