When it comes to the history of the Ford AQHYA World Championship Show and its youth, it’s all scrapped … scrapbooked that is.

At every Ford Youth World, a scrapbook contest is offered and youth teams from around the world compete in it. Some of the scrapbooks have been around for many years and are added to each year while others are brand new and this is their first appearance at the contest.
The scrapbook contest consists of members of state associations presenting the material in the book to three judges and judged on how it is presented as well as how well the scrapbook is put together. The presentation must be memorized and the cue cards the youth practice with are taken away as they enter the contest room.
Chelsea Wilkinson of San Diego, Maryl Lambros of Lavalette, West Virginia, and Brittany Cowell of Brecksville, Ohio, presented the West Virginia Quarter Horse Association’s scrapbook, which has been around for many years.
Maryl had done the scrapbook contest once before when she was younger, but it was the first time for Brittany and Chelsea.
“It was a little nerve racking when you have to memorize and present the information,” Chelsea said.

“I’ve never done it before and this is the first time I’ve been to Youth World. So it was hard and I was nervous but it was fun,” Brittany added.
It was also the first time for Stephanie Willsey and her sister, Elizabeth, whose Ontario, Canada, team put together a scrapbook debuting at the contest. Because the other team members were busy with their equestrian activities, the sisters presented the scrapbook to the judges.
“It was our first year at the Ford Youth World, so we thought the scrapbook would be a fun way to get to know everyone,” Stephanie said.
The team included many photos of their youth association’s activities as well as gave a little history of the association. And when there was a scrapbook malfunction when two pages stuck together, the two sisters carried on without missing a step during their presentation.
“Even though it was our first year, it was a lot of fun,” Elizabeth said.
“We were so impressed with so many of the other scrapbooks,” Stephanie added. “We didn’t realize it was such a big deal. We certainly will step it up for next year.”
