When people think about the Ford AQHYA World Championship Show, they usually think about the action that takes place inside the arena with dedicated youths and their talented American Quarter Horses.

But the Youth World has so much more to offer than just horse showing!

Horse Bowl

Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at 9 a.m.

2009 AQHYA horse bowl contest rules:

  1. All contestants must be members of AQHYA.
  2. The AQHYA Horse Bowl Contest consists of one division made up of all ages.
  3. This particular contest will be double elimination.
  4. Contestants may secure assistance from anyone in preparing for the contest.
  5. The decision of the judge(s) and/or moderator is final.
  6. Only contestants, coach, those affiliated with each particular team, and contest officials will be allowed in the contest room during the preliminary matches. If facilities permit, others attending the contest may match the final match.
  7. All questions will come from references as listed in the current official reference list. There are three types of questions: one-on-one, toss-up and bonus.
  8. Each team consists of four members. Three-member teams are permitted with certain restrictions.
  9. Only contestants may be seated at the game panel.
  10. Only two teams may represent each affiliate and a team may consist of AQHYA, 4-H or FFA members.

Horse Judging

Thursday, August 6, 2009. Check in at 7:30 a.m. in the performance arena. Contest begins at 8 a.m.

2009 AQHYA judging contest rules:

  1. Each affiliate is allowed to send six teams (two 4-H, two FFA and two AQHYA teams). These teams will consist of three or four members for eligibility on team awards. All contestants must be members of AQHYA.
  2. No individuals or teams of less than three members may judge.
  3. Team qualification is a matter of state/provincial affiliate. Interested coaches should contact their affiliate youth advisor or state horse extension specialist or state FFA advisor for qualifying rules.
  4. Contestants must be bona fide 4-H, FFA, or affiliate members and be approved by their respective organizations. All contestants must be members of AQHYA. Attached is a membership form for any youth who need to establish or renew membership.
  5. Each contestant must be 18 years old or younger as of January 1st of the year of the contest.
  6. Youth will be able to compete in both the AQHYA Judging Contest and the AQHYA World Championship Show if schedule permits them to compete in both. No adjustments will be made to working order of the show or judging contest. No exceptions.
  7. No high-point individual overall or any member of a high-point overall team from past AQHYA Judging Contests are eligible to judge in the contest in subsequent years.
  8. Eight classes consisting of four horses in each class shall be judged. There shall be four halter classes and four performance classes. The halter classes will consist of geldings and mares. The performance classes will be selected from western pleasure, reining, hunter under saddle, hunter hack, trail, western riding, and western horsemanship and/or hunt seat equitation.
  9. Two sets of reasons shall be given on halter and two sets of reasons on performance classes. The contestants shall be notified at the appropriate time whether or not reasons will be required on the class being judged. Reasons will not be given in the hunt seat equitation and western horsemanship classes. Reasons shall be given before the judge or judges and for this purpose, private stations shall be provided. Notes may not be used when giving reasons.

Scrap Book

Saturday, August 1, 2009, at 1 p.m.

2009 AQHYA scrapbook contest rules:

  1. All contestants must be members of AQHYA.
  2. Youth from your state, province or country must present their AQHYA affiliate’s scrapbook and explain its contents to the judging committee. Proper attire is suggested (slacks, casual dress suits, or costumes).
  3. Scrapbooks may be no larger than 24 in. by 24 in. and no smaller than 17 in. by 22 in.
  4. The front cover must include the name of the affiliate youth association.
  5. The inside cover must include a table of contents with page numbers.
  6. Scrapbooks will be judged according to the Scrapbook Judging Rubric and results will be posted after winners are chosen.
  7. Have scrapbooks turned into the Youth Office by Friday, July 31, 2009 at noon.
  8. Each entry may receive up to 160 points.
  9. One entry per affiliate.
  10. Each entry has up to five minutes to present their scrapbook to the judges. There will be a 10 point deduction for each additional minute used after the five allotted minutes.

Talent Show

Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at 7 p.m. during the youth mixer

2009 AQHYA talent show rules:

  1. Contestants may either be individuals or groups. All contestants must be members of AQHYA.
  2. There will be two divisions: vocal performance and instrumental performance.
  3. No more than six people may participate in a group.
  4. Performances may be no longer than three minutes.
  5. All music and instruments must be provided by the participants.
  6. CDs only please. The name of the contestant, song number and song must be labeled on the actual CD.
  7. Please bring a note card with a short bio about you.
  8. Management reserves the right to refuse entry or disqualify any entry which displays inappropriate costumes, behavior or song lyrics (sexually explicit or violent lyrics will not be tolerated).
  9. Only the first 20 entries will be taken. No exceptions.

Public Speaking

Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at 10 a.m.

2009 AQHYA public speaking guidlines:

Topic: “Rock Your World”

Objective: Designed to allow the contestant to demonstrate public speaking, communication and promotional skills, organization and knowledge of the industry and leadership ability.

  1. Contestants will deliver a 5-minute speech based on the topic.
  2. The use of visual aids is not permitted. (Note cards may be used, but it is emphasized that excessive use could result in a lower score.)

Speech Contest – Impromptu Speaking

Wednesday, August 5, 2009, immediately following public speaking

2009 AQHYA impromptu speech contest rules and regulations:

Objective: To assist in the development of skills in organization, impromptu thinking and effective communication. This concept gives the participant experience in speaking before a group, formulating clear thoughts and delivering those thoughts to an audience in an effective manner.

  1. Topics for the contest will be furnished by AQHA. Topics, vary and will be announced at the contest, which may be serious or humorous in nature, will be designed to include subjects familiar to the youth. Examples of topics are: Is competition good? If I were a personal trainer… The American Quarter Horse in the year 2025 will be…
  2. Contestants will be called one at a time according to their arranged speaking order. The contestants will draw three topics, select one, and return the remaining two to the container. The contestant will be given five minutes to prepare. Notes may not be used during the speech. Contestants may remain in the contest room only after their speech has been given.
  3. The maximum time limit for each speech is 5 minutes. There is no minimum. Contestants going over the time limit will be penalized.

Team Demonstration Speech Contest

Monday, August 3, 2009, at 10 a.m.

2009 AQHYA team demonstration speech contest guidelines:

Two members per team.

All contestants must be members in good standing of the American Quarter Horse Youth Association. Each state can send up to two teams; the state is responsible for the qualifying system and submitting the two entries to AQHA. A team may consist of two members only. One person may not be a member of two teams.

Brief notes may be used if desired, however excessive use of notes may be counted against the contestant/team at the discretion of the judges. A public address system will not be used during the contest.
Demonstrations/Illustrated Talks should be 8 – 10 minutes in length. A three-points-per-minute penalty will be imposed for being under the minimum time or over the maximum time allowed. There will be up to a 2-minute questioning period. Please be able to set up in 2 minutes and take down in 2 minutes.
