Opportunity Knocks

Massive media coverage of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games will introduce new people to horse sports.

“It’s an unprecedented opportunity for our sport in the United States.”
Marty Bauman, director of media services and operations for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, made that statement speaking at the American Horse Publications annual seminar June 17. That date marked 99 days away from the Games’ opening ceremonies in September.
The specific opportunity Marty points to is media exposure. With this event – the largest sporting event of any type in the United States in 2010 – the American audience will see horse sport as never before.
For example, Marty announced a “record-breaking deal with NBC” for WEG TV coverage: 6.5 hours of live competition coverage spread over three Sunday afternoon prime-time slots. He also listed the following:
- Universal Sports Network will provide more than 30 hours of supplemental TV coverage.
- Media reps from 40 countries are coming, and not just equestrian-related outlets.
- 1,500 media credential applications have been through his office.
- He is planning for 300 media daily in the on-course media center.
- Sports Illustrated will cover the event.
- The New York Times is staffing every day of WEG.
- Kentucky TV stations will cover the event.
Marty told the AHP audience that equine media outlets should take full advantage of this opportunity to put horse sport, both western and English, into the mind of the American public.
“When people get exposed to horses, they stay,” Marty said. “It’s a fact.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to promote our sport, and every one in this room has a vested interest in making sure these games are a success.”
In the coming weeks, you’ll see more WEG information being posted on America’s Horse Daily. We’re excited that AQHA is an official sponsor of WEG and the official breed sponsor of WEG reining and that American Quarter Horses will be part of this enormous media spotlight. Click here to see who the U.S. reining team members are, and stay tuned for more details on them and their backgrounds.
It’s not that far away: Official WEG entries are due August 15; horses begin arriving on September 10; opening ceremonies are September 25. Are you ready to watch?
