Outdated Horse Laws
December 9, 2008
Clinician and author Tena Bastian tracked down some treasures to make you laugh.

Ever wonder what this expression means?
In her book, “Tips and Tidbits for the Horse Lover,” clinician, poet, author and versatile horsewoman Tena Bastian features interesting and entertaining facts and figures about the creature we all adore – the horse.
Hint, hint – her books make excellent gifts!
Some of our favorite tips featured in her book are the outdated laws related to horses that remain in the record books. Here are a few:
- If you’re planning on going fishing while on horseback in Utah, put your poles away because it is illegal in some parts.
- In Culpeper, Virginia, it is illegal to bathe your mule on the sidewalk.
- In Wilbur, Washington, you can’t ride an ugly horse.
- In Temple, Texas, it is perfectly acceptable to ride your horse through a saloon but never drive a horse and buggy through the town square.
- In Fountain Inn, South Carolina, all horses must wear pants.
- In Chicago, it is illegal for women over 200 pounds to ride horses while wearing shorts.
- In parts of Iowa, horses are forbidden from eating fire hydrants.
- In Phoenix, you better check your spurs at the door because it’s illegal for a cowboy to walk through the lobby of a hotel with his spurs on.
- In parts of Kansas, shops must provide a water trough for horses. Gaming regulations also prohibit the use of mules for duck hunting.
- In Colorado, it is illegal to ride a horse while under the influence or to bring your horse above the ground floor of any building.
- You don’t want to get caught riding your horse up the stairs of the county courthouse in Prescott, Arizona.

Did You Know?
According to Tena, when a horse points her nose to the sky and raises her upper lip, it is to better locate a smell. Horses have a very keen sense of smell and always stay attuned to their surroundings. A stallion will do this when he senses a mare in season. This is referred to as flehmen. Any horse might raise his lip to locate a specific horse in a herd.

Love the story chapters that Tena reads to you. They are great to hear in the author’s own words and are very moving stories…will also make you think about your own horse story history. I hope to hear more in the future!

Love her books . I got them for Christmas last year. One is even autographed. I hope she writes more as I will be the first in line to buy one. I found new information with the turn of every page of her books. Very entertaining as well. I would love to see one made see her book made into a documentary type program . I would watch it.

I do have two of Tena’s books, and have had the honor of meeting her in person and visiting her place. Her stallion Beau is one of the most beautiful palominos I’ve seen.
