“The first year I came to this show I brought four horses; this year I brought 15.”

That’s how much fun trainer Jenny Welhouse and her riders had at last year’s Region Three Championship. The 2010 rendition of the show in St. Paul, Minnesota, is proving to be the same.
Jenny’s student Becca Priske of Poynette, Wisconsin, earned five championships over fences on Thursday, July 15, with The Perfect Gent. After a late win in hunt seat equitation, Becca pushed her buckle count to six, which set a Region Three record for most wins at a single Region Three.
The second day of the Region Three competition started off with beautiful weather, free coffee and donuts and hunters on course. Exhibitors were treated to a watermelon feed in the afternoon, sponsored by AgStar Financial and served by Region Three volunteers.
The happy attitudes and fun, relaxed atmosphere is much of what draws new exhibitors to the Region Three and keeps several coming back year after year. I met four brand new exhibitors from Wisconsin here today, all happy to be here, having fun.
It was off to the races for those exhibitors with some downtime Thursday evening: The Minnesota Quarter Horse Racing Association hosted Region Three at nearby Canterbury Park for an evening of American Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing. Canterbury Park is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year by offering free admission to the races, making it an easy night for exhibitors, friends and family to see the faster side of American Quarter Horses.
