A snaffle bit is typically a o-ring, D-ring, egg butt bit with a broken mouth piece and no shanks. Some people classify a tom thumb as a snaffle because it has a broken mouth piece, but it also has shanks. Shanks will give the rider leverage if the bit has a curb chain. That is also the difference. Bits with a curb chain are typically stronger than a typical o-ring/ non-shanked bit because of the leverage applied to the bottom jaw. Whereas a o-ring snaffle is direct pressure to the mouth.
