Once you have an alpha mare that you found a way to get along with other horses have a hard time stacking up . They seem to be the best ever at times & others the worst when theyre so smart . Just buried my long time girl last year & have 3 remaining girls but really miss her spark . You have to use / own one to love one .

Can't wait to read part 2! I have a nine year old, Skye, that is most definetly the alpha mare except when her mother, Lady, is in the area whether in the pasture or under saddle. Funny thing, Lady, never acts like the alpha mare with the other horses, they respect her but she never bullies them like Skye does.

Zen sounds like my late mare. She was sweet as as could be nice to be around as long as others didn't invade her territory. She sometimes would invade theirs. I really had to watch when riding with others or showing. She was okay around my gelding and loved her babies.
Your story of Zen brought back memories of my beloved mare and her ways. She was a Pistol at times and a hard ride at times but I loved her. Wish I could have taken her to a clinic like this. The experience would have been useful back then.
Thank you for your fun article. It made my day.

Looking forward to part two. I rode both Doc and Diamond after getting them back home from trainer. Doc for the 3rd time and Diamond the first time. Not sure I'd be brave enough to take the type of clinic you did with Zen. Also looking forward to Willow reports. Should have been in Palo Duro Canyon with us today. Beautiful day and foliage still colorful. Photos:
