I have a 3 year old mare that accepts haltering and being bridled, but when it comes to deworming, that spooky plastic syringe is just too much. On the last attempt, she kept jerking her head up and away, but then would stop and lick her lips, put her head down submissively but still wouldn't accept the syringe. Rubbing her face quietly with the syringe on this and on the previous try haven't made much difference and so I opted for dewormers I could put in her feed. Before I sent her away for training, she was OK with the syringe (ie., younger than 2 years old), curiosity got the better of her I think. While at the trainer's, she had wolf teeth pulled. I don't know if this has set the stage for anxiety for the deworming syringe. Any suggestions out there? Apart from this, she is an affectionate and willing partner.
