Two Bits Family Tree
December 11, 2009
Let’s join Two Bits in a look at horse bloodlines and do a fun pedigree activity.
It’s getting close to Christmas, folks, and that gets me to thinking about my family! I thought it would be fun this year to get out my pedigree and see exactly where I come from. It’s interesting to see not only who my great-grandsires are, but to also see how my name came about.
American Quarter Horses enjoy the honor of being registered at the American Quarter Horse Association in Amarillo. There are more than 5 million registered Quarter Horses in the whole world. That’s a whole lot of horses! I am proud to call myself one of them.
Speaking of what I call myself, did you know that registered horses usually have two names? Yep, we usually enjoy a registered name and a nickname. My registered name just happens to be kind of short, so I just go by it. But I have friends that have a registered name like Wranglers Prime Time but go by “Doc.” Ol’ Doc and I have had some good times!
Crazy about horses? Test your knowledge with AQHA’s Junior Master Horseman program. You can even earn certificates!
I like to look back at my family history and pedigree and see where I came from. I think it’s fun to see how, when my great-grandhorses had foals, they named them with neat combinations of their own names. That’s how I got to be Two Bits. My dam was Lil Bits, and my sire was Pick Me Two, so I got the “Two” from Dad and the “Bits” from Mom. Yep, it’s always a cool thing to just take some time around the holidays and think of where I came from and how great my family is. Check out other horse records at AQHA’s awesome records research site.
I hope you all have a great holiday as well, and if you would like to do a pedigree activity to see where you come from, feel free to head on over to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame Web site and do the Two Bits Pedigree Pursuit.
Happy Holidays!
Two Bits
