She made it!

Melinda Mayes and Almosta Boom compete in the horsemanship prelims on the opening day of the 2009 AQHA World Championship Show.
For the past year, Melinda Mayes has been trying to get her husband’s roping horse, Almosta Boom, qualified for the 2009 AQHA World Championship Show in horsemanship.
The Journal had talked to Melinda in May at the Texas Classic when she was just a few points away from the 16.5 points needed to qualify. By the end of summer, the Weatherford, Texas, amateur and “Little Al” earned more than enough — 19.5 points — to make it to Oklahoma City.
The pair competed on November 6, the opening day of the show, with 52 other entrants. They didn’t make it back to the finals but Melinda was happy to have accomplished her goal of showing that American Quarter Horses are still the most versatile breed out there.
“It’s my first world show and you have to do it a few times before you really get it down,” she said. “He just got a little worried by the gate and had a problem with one of his lead. We’re going to get back at it though and we’ll certainly be back again.”
