Two Bits wants to run for office!
But before he goes and jumps in head first, he realizes there is a lot of preparation that goes into running for such a prestigious office. So Two Bits is going to start with a little research. First things first, though. Let’s meet a few of the youth members in office now.

AQHYA officers 2009-2010
Jocelyn Tanner is the secretary for the 2009-2010 AQHYA officer team. She’s from Webster, New Hampshire, and aside from horses, she loves swimming and soccer. Her favorite food (one of Two Bits favorite questions) is spaghetti.
Jocelyn had the best walk trot horse anyone could ever ask for, Promotin Zippos. “Zip,” as he was known as around the barn, taught Jocelyn a lot and is greatly missed. He was not just a horse to Jocelyn but he was her teacher, her courage, her partner and most of all her friend. Jocelyn would like to be an elementary school teacher and is attending St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, North Carolina, where she is majoring in elementary education with a minor in equine studies. She is also a member of the IHSA Western Team.
Jocelyn’s favorite quote is, “Where you end up isn’t the most important thing, it’s the road you take to get there, and the road you take is what you’ll look back on and call your life” by Time Wiley.
Britt Lynch is AQHYA Region 10 Director. She’s from Monroe, Georgia, and loves to read, write, sight-see and hang out with friends. Her favorite foods are sushi, fresh fruit and pasta. Radically Reinvested is her horse; his barn name is “Rad” and he and Britt have accomplished much together, including being a finalist in hunt seat equitation at the Youth World this past year and fourth in youth western riding at the All American Quarter Horse Congress this year. But watch out, according to Britt, Rad is famous for licking your boots. Britt would like to be an author when she gets older and though she’s undecided, she’s looking at attending UGA, Yale, Boston and NYU. Her favorite quote is, “Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your personality. Be active, be energetic and faithful, and you will accomplish your object. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm” by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Crazy about horses? Test your knowledge with AQHA’s Junior Master Horseman program. You can even earn certificates!
Last, but not least!
Your AQHYA President, Cait Kerber from Warrensburg, Missouri. Aside from her love of horses, Cait loves playing golf, Asian food and, especially, sushi is her favorite food. Iron Prairie Cat, also known as “Elvis” was her first real show horse and was such as “sweetie” (much like himself, according to Two Bits). Cait would like to get into politics and hopefully be a U.S. senator someday. She is undecided between the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor and Tulane University. Her favorite quote comes from the great Confucius. “Wheresover you go, go with all your heart.”
Two Bits had a great time meeting some of the 2009-2010 officers of AQHYA, but in order to achieve his goal of becoming an officer someday, he thinks he needs to know a little more about the process of getting there. So Two Bits went to AQHYA online and did some reading.
Here are a few questions to help Two Bits and maybe even you decide rather or not to run for office.
- Am I at least 14 years of age?
- Will I remain eligible for youth membership(18 years of age or younger) on January 1 the final year of my term?
- Do I reside in the region I wish to represent?
- Do I believe in the purpose of AQHYA?
- Do I believe I can help with youth with varied horse backgrounds find their place in AQHYA?
- Do I behave in a courteous and respectful manner and refrain from actions that might bring discredit upon AQHYA?
- Will I do my part to carry out the AQHYA Executive Committee and Board of Directors plan of work for the next year?
- Am I a delegate from the state or provincial American Quarter Horse Youth Affiliate where I reside?
- Can I attend the AQHYA Convention?
- Can I make appropriate travel arrangements?
